Chapter 22 – The Most Powerful Demon King in History. Slays Monsters
I stepped out through the broken wall and saw three monsters.
Also, they were ghost-type monsters.
Perhaps the cemetery was not properly managed.
I destroyed the ghosts using Fireball Magic.
“…… Mmm. They’re still out there, a little farther away.”
Moreover, they are not small fry ghosts. They are skeletons, the strongest kind of undead.
Their entire bodies are made of hard bones, making it difficult for weapons to penetrate them, and they have high magic resistance.
Even the best swordsmen and mages have a hard time with these undead.
I approach the skeletons.
In that short time, the number of skeletons has steadily increased to more than ten.
“There are a lot of them, but to me, they’re just small fry.”
I sweep away hordes of undead with Wind Blade Magic.
But soon they start spawning again.
“They’re spawning too fast.”
I felt someone’s manipulation.
This is not a natural occurrence, but is most likely manipulated by a necromancer.
For the time being, if the undead are wiped away, they would move sooner or later.
With that in mind, I mow them down from one end to the other. Even so, the undead kept coming.
Three minutes later, the undead were still spawning.
“Necromancer, I don’t know where you are, but let’s have a test of endurance. I only need to keep beating them for hours.”
The necromancer can’t keep spawning undead indefinitely.
If so, it’s a contest to see which will get exhausted first, my magic power or the resources the necromancer has prepared.
Although, if I want to keep the undead from spawning, there are other ways.
However, I was trying to find the enemy’s location while defeating the undead.
(I feel like there’s a slight presence when they spawn… I’m not sure.)
As I was doing that, I heard hoofbeats.
“Master, why are you here?”
“Lumiel, are you alone again?”
It was Lumiel who rushed in.
And above her, Jorm who I put on her this morning was flying stealthily.
“We received a request for help from the residents of the town, so we rushed as a Knight Order.”
“As a Knight Order, huh?”
All things considered, Lumiel is the lone horseman here.
The knights must have disobeyed orders again.
“Master, what’s the situation?”
“I was playing with the children when the undead appeared. So I was just knocking them down.”
“Okay! I’ll join you!”
“I don’t need help, but…”
Lumiel jumped off his horse and drew his sword.
She then charged into the horde of undead and swung her sword.
Such splendid sword technique. Her physical enhancement magic is also natural and never stagnant.
She mows down skeletons and slashes ghosts. But they soon spawn again.
However, immediately after that, the respawned undead transformed.
From skeletons and ghosts, to even more advanced undead, such as a lich.
“A lich. Quite a powerful undead you’ve summoned.”
The lich spawned, as if it had been waiting for Lumiel’s arrival.
Liches are spiritual bodies, so they can’t use anything other than magic as a weapon. And it uses powerful magic.
It usually takes a group of excellent mages to vanquish one.
“Haaaaaaaaah!!”
As Lumiel charges in, the lich’s powerful magic rains down on her.
Lumiel slashed through the magic with a mere sword, and with that flow, she slashed through the lich’s body.
“…… how?”
Involuntarily, I shouted out in surprise.
She had slashed through the lich’s body with a mere weapon that shouldn’t have worked.
Lumiel seemed to have channeled her own magic power into the sword, turning it into a simple magic sword.
Lumiel then shouted, “Over there!”, and threw a dagger.
The dagger flew into the grass a short distance away.
“Nuguu”
The flying dagger pierced the forehead of an elven mage.
It was the elusive necromancer.
Suddenly, the undead stopped spawning.
Lumiel breathed a sigh of relief.
“I’m glad I was able to defeat him safely.”
And Lumiel looks here.
“I’m so grateful. Thanks to master stopping them, there was no damage to the town. Thank you.”
“You don’t have to worry about that, but does this happen often?”
“Yes. It seems that monsters around the town are increasing recently.”
The moment Lumiel arrived, the spawning method changed.
The small fry I defeated were just bait to lure Lumiel out.
And she was attacked by a lich that a swordsman without a magic sword would be unable to defeat.
If Lumiel were an ordinary knight, she would have died.
I move to investigate the necromancer who tried to assassinate her.
“…… an elven necromancer, huh? That’s unusual.”
Necromancy should culturally be a magic system at which demons excel.
Elves could probably use it, but there were few practitioners.
“Lumiel. Are necromancers common among elves now?”
“No, I have never heard of a necromancer among the elves either.”
Apparently, the relationship between necromancy and the elves wasn’t much different than it was five hundred years ago.
“For now, let’s check the identity of the body.”
Lumiel says and tries to examine the corpse.
However, the moment Lumiel touches it, the necromancer’s body dissolves into mush.
Even the bones melted and soaked into the soil.
“Hii!”
“It’s a technique to prevent information from being taken from the corpse.”
“So, there is such a technique?”
“Yes, there is.”
No wonder Lumiel doesn’t know about it.
This is also magic that belongs to the magic system that the demon race excel at.
“It’s the kind of magic that intelligence agents or army generals cast on themselves in times of war.”
“I didn’t know that.”
It may be a lost art in the Kingdom of Ortville, which has been at peace for nearly a hundred years.
“Anyway, why did you come alone? You are the Commander, aren’t you?”
Lumiel is the Knight Commander of the Order.
She should leave the outbreak of undead to her subordinates.
Even if she was coming herself, it would be strange for her to come alone.
“Um, it seems that the preparations wouldn’t be done in time… I thought it would be faster if I rushed over alone.”
The old men said that the knights were those sent by the Prime Minister.
The knights may have defied orders by deliberately delaying preparations.
I’ll find out about it later when I ask Jorm, who is still watching from the sky.
“Lumiel, how did you know where the necromancer was?”
“…… um, somehow.”
“………… Somehow.”
“Yes.”
With that said, Lumiel smiles.
The Hero’s intuition, or the divine protection of the Holy God. I wonder if that’s what she meant.
“I see.”
This power cannot be replaced by other people.
When I fight the Demon God, having Lumiel on my side will certainly increase my chances of victory.
Then, I went with Lumiel to examine the undead carcasses.
Then, one of the larger children arrived.
Despite their size, they were about seven or eight years old.
“It’s dangerous to come out of town, right?”
“It’s okay, I’ll keep the little ones inside the town!”
“It’s still dangerous, though.”
Even though she is relatively older, she is still a child.
“Besides, we’re safe now that Mr. Hyrum and the princess are here!”
The children have been watching me since I was fighting.
And since the battle was over, one of the older children ran over.
“Mr. Hyrum, here, let me help you take the body apart!”
“Do you want to help? Why again…”
When I asked for more details, it seemed that the child wanted some pocket money for helping to dismantle the carcass.
“If you defeat a skeleton, you can sell bones and magic stones and stuff.”
“I see. Then you can take whatever you want. I’m not interested in loot.”
“Huh? Are you sure?”
“Yes, it’s fine.”
With that said, the child is overjoyed and starts the dismantling. She’s experienced.
“You’re pretty good at that.”
“Un! I do it a lot!”
“What’s your name?”
“Uh, it’s Jessica!”
“Is that so? Next time I defeat a monster around here, I’ll ask Jessica to help me dismantle it.”
“Thank you! I’ll be in your care, from now on!!”
It is the knight’s job to defeat the monsters that attack the town.
And knights don’t like to do tedious jobs like dismantling.
That’s why Jessica and the older children help out to earn some extra money.
Jessica is the only one today, but it seems that usually more people do the dismantling work.
With Jessica’s help, the dismantling and clean up were done easily.
And so, together with Lumiel and Jessica, I returned to the town.
