12. I’ve Missed You The Whole Time

She and Lexia ――they have been together for a long time.

Long before Meik became known as a Hero.

Meik had a talent with swords. She also had a talent for magic. On top of that, she even had the skills needed to be called a Hero.

The perfect hero, perfect in every way and sought after by others – but Meik wasn’t interested in such an existence.

Just because she said to her.

　

“That’s amazing, Meik. If it’s you, you’ll be a great Hero.”

　

She was delighted. Because she—Lexia—said that.

That’s why Meik chose the path of becoming a Hero.

Lexia was a healer with the Recovery skill, but she knows that her personality is not suited for fighting.

Still, it was Meik’s selfishness that made her want to keep her by her side.

He wanted her to stay by her side forever――he would protect Lexia no matter what.

For Meik, it was because of Lexia that he could continue to be a Hero.

And yet, Lexia suddenly disappeared.

In the dangerous land of the Lamenting Corsesta, she vanished without even leaving a trace.

The party members were given three days to find Lexia. With that, she thought it would be easy to find Lexia. But they couldn’t.

There was no mention of her returning to the town, so she must have been attacked by a monster on the way back.

In Meik’s heart, nothing remained.

She was able to become a Hero because Lexia was there. She was able to fight because Lexia was there.

Meik didn’t know what to do from now on.

However, Act said to Meik.

　

“If monsters are the cause… then defeating Lochness might be the best way to avenge her.”

　

――That’s right. It’s all their fault.

Meik decided to go to the Corsesta because there is such a thing as the King of Demons.

If she hadn’t gone there, she wouldn’t have lost Lexia ――Meik knows that isn’t the reason.

Still, Meik had no choice but to take that path in order to fight.

　

“How did it end up like this…?”

　

On the battlefield, two comrades were collapsed.

Eddie and Ritoa already had no energy left to stand up.

Act, who had been so relaxed with the party members, watched from the sidelines with a frightened expression.

Even though he brought in someone new with a Recovery skill, the new member had already been killed by Lochness without hesitation.

That was the signal for battle. The King of Demons ―― “Lochness the Weeping Cat”.

It looks like a cat, but it is not certain that it is a cat.

It shimmers like a mirage, and they are unable to grasp its reality.

However, attacks against Lochness passes through.

Meik’s attacks could not reach Lochness.

　

“Nyaa.”

　

The cat’s meow reached her ears.

Looking up, she saw a black, shadowy cat standing in front of her.

　

“Nyaa, nyaa.”

　

It is no longer a voice, but a sound. Meik saw the figure, clenched her sword and swung it.

　

“You bastard!”

　

Blazing flame. This magic was Meik’s specialty.

However, it still does not reach Lochness.

It just phased through, and Meik’s final blow came up empty.

Falling on her back on the spot, she saw Lochness raising his paws.

　

“I don’t have a reason to fight anymore…”

　

She muttered as if she had given up.

With a thud, the front paws of Lochness swung down.

With that blow, Meik was supposed to die.

Closing her eyes ――all she remembered was Lexia.

She wanted to touch her face, hear her voice, just one more time.

　

“Meik, are you okay?”

“Lex, ia…?”

“Yes, it’s me.”

“How, oh… why…? Why are you here!?”

　

Although frightened, Act was first to raise his voice at the sight of the one who had arrived.

The person Meik had been looking for all this time was right in front of him.

　

“Lexia…! I missed you, I was worried about you…!”

“! Un, I’m sorry…”

　

Lexia answers Meik’s words.

　

“Wait a minute, I’ll finish this right now.”

　

Lexia then puts Meik down.

Before she knew it, Lexia had already picked up Meik and distanced herself from Lochness.

　

“Lexia, you… that sword…? And, your movement just now…… “

“I’ll explain later. I wanted to ask you something, too, but now I understand most of it, so it’s okay. Meik, I’ve missed you the whole time, too. And I want to be with you from now on.”

　

With her sword ready, Lexia faces Lochness.

As Lochness tried to disappear like a phantom, Lexia pointed her sword at it.

　

“Lochness, can you do it?”

『Yes, I knew it when I saw it. Because a part of me that was created from it ―― my attack will pierce it.』

　

The sword was talking. Meik couldn’t understand what was happening.

However, in the next moment— with a blow from Lexia —Lochness was torn apart in the blink of an eye and vanished.
